Shaving Down a Stick

Right now I am sitting at work shaving down wooden dowel to make a sizing rod for making untensil rings. Imagine me sitting in my cut-off jean shorts and BikeStation polo. Now, imagine me with a 3 foot oak dowel and a not-so-sharp pocket knife...reciepe for a long day. Just standing over the trash can, to catch the shavings, and...back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. Trust me, this is not an enuendo. It would be a lot cooler if it was though, that is for sure!
To the left is the length of the dowel, which I am shaving down to create a sizing rod for the rings. It started out as wide as the top left picture shows, now it is just as wide as the penny is. It needs to get even smaller to size women's hands. Geez, what a mind numbing task. At least it will give me something to do on the road. Who knows, maybe I'll sharpen it to a point so i can fish with it too...I guess I will just have to wait and see!

  1. Seems like using some coarse sandpaper would be a lot easier...

  2. Quite possibly, however I have found that it is quite tranquil about sliding the knife against the rod. I imagine being out on the road with a spoon, a mallet and this finished sizing rod. With every stroke, I see another ring being made. Another person looking at my jewelry, buying or not, and tell the story of how this trip came into being. I'm not trying to make it harder for myself, but I am trying to create a story so that it will all mean something more.

Great idea though! I'll probably use some sandpaper to smooth out the finished product.

Everyone keep it up with ideas and comments. Interaction is fun.

  4. I will be making charms, rings and bracelets out of utensils. I got the idea from a man in Berkeley that sells them on the street. The idea is to get some nicely designed utensils and have a story behind each one. Each piece will special and unique so the person who wears it will have special powers. Some will make you fly, some give the person super human strength, others will make you invisible...you know, the regular sort of thing.

Also, to the first comment: I tried using a metal file and it is waaaaaayyyyy easier. Thanks for the idea!

  5. Haha, I figured as much. Once you've got your craft down and are back in California let me know and I shall purchase one to add to my collection. :)

  8. I'm sure I have an idea. You should 'follow' the blog (become a follower on the right hand side of the page) so I can tell who is posting what. Or not. Either way is cool, just don't forget to check it out ALL the time! :D
